Pluto’s turned out to have a heart-shaped region on the surface!

「ヒドラ」は、55km(34マイル)×40km(25マイル)、「ニクス」は、42km(26マイル)×36km(22マイル)と推測されています。

■The fist high-definition image are really impressive! I’m sure you’ve already seen some photos of Pluto. NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft has finished its closest approach to Pluto after a long journey of nine and a half years, and 3.03 billion miles (4.88 billion km). NASA has announced that New Horizons could draw near to the distance of about 12,500 km from the Pluto’s surface. Looking at these high-definition photos, I think this mission is just giving the most exciting opportunity to me, one of space enthusiasts, because I’ve ever seen only vague images of Pluto and its moons. I’m happy enough to see these close-up images of Pluto and the largest moon Charon which no one would have ever seen in human history.
■Heart-shaped “Tombaugh Region” and icy mountain ranges that ascend 11,000 ft (3,500m). The first whole image of Pluto was taken when the New Horizons spacecraft was 477,000 miles (768,000 km) away from the surface. I was pretty surprised to find a heart-shaped region, “Tombaugh Region”, which was informally named after Clyde Tombaugh who first discovered Pluto in 1930. We can see an “icy mountain range” on the image of the area several hundred km square on Pluto’s equator - near the heart-shaped region. Many of mountains seem to ascend 3,500 meters. This mountainous area was named “Norgay Montes” after Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. In the southwest of the “Tombaugh Region”, we can see other mountain ranges on the image newly released by NASA.
■Irregularly scale-like features on the white icy plains. On another image of Pluto taken when the spacecraft was 77,000 km away from the surface, we saw a vast, white plain stretching out all over, which is located beside the ”Norgay Montes” and within the heart-shaped “Tombaugh Region.” These smooth plains were named “Sputnik Planum” after the world’s first artificial satellite “Sputnik”, occasionally interrupted by networks of polygonal fractures and oddly bumpy hills. Scientists say that the temperature may be about minus 230 degrees Celsius on the plains composed of frozen monoxide carbon, methane and nitrogen.
■A very long crack stretching for 1,000 km on the surface of Charon. The image of Charon, the largest moon of Pluto’s five ones, is also really impressive. The moon is relatively large enough to form a binary system with Pluto - in other words, a double dwarf planet system. In fact, Pluto and Charon are rotating around their common center of mass located outside Pluto. The diameter of Charon is 1,208 km, whereas the one of Pluto is 2,370 km. It means this moon is as wide ashas approximately half the diameter. Three major features are as follows: (1) A very long crack stretching for 1,000 km from the bottom left to the upper right of the image. (2) A valley 7 - 9 km deep in the upper-right part of the image. (3) There are not very many craters on the moon’s surface. We also have to focus on the dark area near the top of the image. It seems to be made up of materials different from those of other portions, but it is not revealed yet what the dark area is composed of.
■Awkwardly shaped satellites “Hydra” and “Nix” NASA also has released an intriguing image of two smaller satellites “Hydra” and “Nix”. On the image they are both awkwardly shaped. They are tumbling and rotating around the double dwarf planet system formed by Pluto and Charon. Hydra and Nix are almost the same size. Hydra is estimated to be 34 miles (55 kilometers) long and 25 miles (40 kilometers) wide. Nix is presumed to be 26 miles (42 kilometers) long and 22 miles (36 kilometers) wide. Nix has a reddish spot that has attracted the interest of mission scientists. Images of Pluto's most recently discovered moons, Styx and Kerberos, are expected to be transmitted to the Earth no later than mid-October.
■”New Horizons” will observe trans-Neptunian objects around 2020. The New Horizons spacecraft is scheduled to go on observing Pluto till August, 2015, and transmit all the observation data to the Earth by May, 2016. At the moment, “New Horizons” has transmitted only a small portion, but other images and observation data that will be transmitted during the next months may lead to bigger discoveries. I am looking forward to the occasion very much. “New Horizons” is expected to get out of the solar system after observing trans-Neptunian objects within the Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt around 2020. And then it will continue to navigate its way through outer space alone forever.
